Welcome to another week of Stuff We Like with Freddy. Now you may look at the title of the post and be thinking "Are you kidding?" Nope. Not one iota. I have loved the Deadpool character for as long as I can remember. He first showed up in The New Mutants (#98) in 1991. If you are a fan you knew he was originally depicted as a supervillan with accelerated healing powers. A mentally unstable mercenary who often broke (breaks) the fourth wall (to much joy of fans everywhere). Over the last 24 years he has evolved into more of an antihero than a supervillan. Watching his evolution has been fascinating, and a study in story telling and character growth. He unapologetically knows he is a comic book character, makes decisions in the moment, is a confirmed omnisexual (really, anyone will do. Think those Spiderman X Deadpool memes are ridiculous, would never happen? Deadpool would totally hit that given the chance), and sometimes his decisions will rub ethics the wrong fucking way. Deadpool is unapologetic for who he is. That's another reason I like him. He is a character. He embraces himself - flaws and all (his many, many flaws) - and rides along with them. Deadpool runs the spectrum of human integrity and morals, and knows it. He's not black and white but all the colors in the crayon box. And all this means he is more real, more human than a lot characters out there. By the way - Ryan Reynolds is killing Deadpool so far (and the 12 Days of Deadpool leading up to the new trailer has been quite humorous thus far.) Yes, I am eager for this movie.
